As the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games it comes as no surprise that Beijing has a variety of sporting options for both locals and the multitude of foreign visitors it attracts each year. Popular facilities include such sports as football, basketball, tennis, squash and table tennis. For those in excellent physical condition options like rock-climbing, horseback riding, diving and bungee-jumping are available. Less demanding pursuits such as golf, bowling and billiards are also on offer.

The Beijing National Aquatics Center, referred to unofficially as the Water Cube, is a magnificent state-of-the-art complex for swimming and water sports, originally constructed to host the swimming, synchronized swimming and diving competitions of the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The building which has a cuboid structure was one of the most imposing structures constructed for the Olympics.

The design for the Water Cube was selected from no less than 10 proposals submitted by leading international architectural specialists, and incorporates Chinese symbolism in the design. The Chinese experts felt that the design featuring a cube was in keeping with Chinese cultural tradition, and the Australian design firm chosen for the project suggested the concept of covering the surface of the cube with a bubble-like effect, which is a symbol for the element of water.

The walls of the arena consist of 3,500 bubbles’, which are formed of a cushion-like plastic substance composed of a special transparent Teflon material. At night the lighting system at the arena transforms the site into a vibrant colourful display.

Interestingly the Water Cube Olympic pool is considered to be the fastest of its kind in the world, assisting the swimmers with extra depth and featuring special gutters at the sides to absorb waves created by the swimmers.

Having successfully accomplished its mission at the Olympics, the Water Cube is now being transformed into a water park.

Travellers in search of serviced apartments Beijing will find what they seek in the Somerset Grand Fortune Garden, an establishment that is a leader amongst Beijing serviced apartments. Well-furnished interiors and attentive service make them a very attractive proposition.

For most visitors to Russia, its rivers are noticed only while crossing a bridge or strolling along an embankment, as pleasant backdrops to sights that command more attention. To experience Russia only from the land, however, is to miss a central feature of its character, for river travel has stood at the heart of Russian life for millenia.

All of the greatest cities of European Russia have since their foundation been intimately associated with the rivers that they adjoin. Moscow, for example, sits at the confluence of the Moskva and the Neglina, and St. Petersburg and Novgorod lay on the Volhov. The greatest of Russia’s rivers, however, is the Volga. At 2,300 miles (3,700 km), it is the longest river in Europe, navigable for virtually its entire length. It was along the Volga that the ancient trade routes of Russia were developed, giving rise to a whole string of trading posts, fortresses, and towns during medieval times. Yaroslavl, Uglich, Kostroma, and Nizhni Novgorod, four of Russia’s most revered and beautiful cities, are all situated along its banks.

water01.jpg (19370 bytes) With the completion of the impressive Moscow-Volga Canal in 1937, the capital was finally linked to the great system of waterways that runs from St. Petersburg on the Gulf of Finland all the way to Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. As a result, it is easy today to experience the trip that Peter the Great first dreamt of–a leisurely sail from St. Petersburg to Moscow, passing by the finest medieval cities in the country. For the particularly ambitious traveller, it is entirely possible to follow the entire trade route along the Volga, from St. Petersburg all the way to Astrakhan, the ancient capital of the Tatars.

Yaroslavl

One of Russia’s oldest cities, Yaroslavl was founded by Yaroslav the Wise of Kievan Rus’ in 1010. Over the next several centuries the city prospered as a trading port on the Volga and a center of textile manufacture, becoming by the 17th century the second largest city in Russia behind Moscow. Its wealthy merchant community became notable patrons of the arts, building hundreds of churches. Fortunately, the great majority of these remain intact today, making the city one of the most beautiful destinations in Russia.

Uglich

The approach to Uglich is one of the most memorable sights of a cruise along the Volga. Bereft of the usual screen of Kremlin walls, its especially fine churches and cathedral rise up from the horizon in a brilliant play of red, blue, and gold.

The city’s visual appeal, as well as its tragic past, have made Uglich one of the most beloved cities in Russia. Founded in 1148, it flourished during the 13th and 14th centuries, and was favored in the 16th by Ivan the Terrible. Not only did Ivan use Uglich as a base for his campaigns against the Golden Horde, but he also selected the city as the location of his seventh wife’s honorary exile from Moscow. Upon Ivan’s death, his son Dmitry joined his mother here, only to be brutally murdered by Boris Godunov as part of his campaign to seize the crown. On the spot where the murder took place, the city built the magnificent Church of St. Demetrius on the Blood, which greets the eye of all who approach the city. The Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John’s Church are nearby, similar in design and beauty.

Kostroma

mos31.jpg (22229 bytes)Kostroma’s associations with great figures in Russian history is second only to Moscow and St. Petersburg. It was founded in 1152 by Yuri Dolgoruky, who also gave Moscow its start. Kostroma experienced its first great period of prosperity as the home of the Godunov family, which arrived in the 14th century and quickly rose to prominence in the region. By the time that Boris Godunov enjoyed his brief and tragic reign as tsar, the city had become the third largest commercial center in Russia, surpassed only by Moscow and Yaroslavl.

After Godunov’s fall and the Time of Troubles, the throne was offered to Michael Romanov, whose family had long been fierce opponents of the Kostroma Godunovs. However, as chance would have it, it was in Kostroma itself that Michael was elected Tsar. The city of his enemy became a sort of adoptive hometown, and the Romanovs continued to provide the city of he fallen Godunov’s with influential patronage. Although Michael began this tradition, it was Catherine the great who eventually had the greatest impact on Kostroma’s appearance. After a disastrous fire in 1773 which destroyed all but a few buildings, Catherine decided to turn the city into a showpiece for her enlightened design principles. She sent in a slew of her best designers from St. Petersburg, and within a few years Kostroma had been transformed. The city center remains as one of the finest examples of late 18th century architectural principles in Russia. Of particular interest are Susanin Square, the Ipatyevsky Monastery, and the outdoor museum, containing a number of fine examples of traditional wood-construction architecture.

Tel Aviv Jaffa is one of the most happening cities in the world. Once you visit this city with your family, you will never face a boring moment. It can offer everything to the tourist from an exotic nightlife to mouthwatering cuisines. It is easy to catch a tel aviv jaffa flight since el al runs flights to this city. Once you land on the Ben Gurion International Airport, you can enter the city by boarding a taxi from this airport or by taking a train. This airport has a mall too to enable first class shopping for tourists.

Since Tel Aviv is the center of the nightlife in this country, what the tourists can expect is visits to the richest collection of nightclubs. On fact, these clubs have seen growth of singers who now have international music careers. No action happens at these Tel Aviv Jaffa night life places before its 12 pm in the night. Apart from that, the disco music is played brilliantly here. Even the five star hotels like Sheraton and Ramada in this city offer tourists the pleasure of enjoying themselves with pianists and singers. This city also has excellent night hangouts for gay people. In fact, this city hosts the gay pride parade of the Middle Eastern countries. Independence Park located near Ha-Yarkon Street is a great meeting point for gay people. Apart from enjoying yourself in nightclubs, people can also enjoy through walking and observing other people in this city. Such walking activities can be done easily on the Herbert Samuel Esplanade-Ha-Tayelet and Dizengoff Street. The latter place is packed with crowds on weekdays and on Saturday when film shows happen here, this place is jampacked. Cafes are also located on the sidewalks. So, one can enjoy film shows with coffee ice cream sodas.

You should not also miss out on tel aviv jaffa shopping while you are in this city. It can make sure that you can lay hands on the most authentic souvenirs to goods belonging to the best designers.

The tourists can get something real on Allenby Street, which is a hub of bookstores, kiosks, bakeries and clothing stores. However, if one desires to shop in malls, then Opera Tower, which is located nearby to Allenby Street, should not be missed. It has galleries, cafs and shops that sell fashionable clothing of our times. Some of the cafes of this place are open for wee hours in the evening too.

One of the best ways to enjoy is to take some art souvenirs from Gordon Street. It has the most bizarre art galleries. In fact, visitors can also get some great art stuff from Rothschild Boulevard, which also has an eclectic collection of restaurants. However, you will have to visit these art galleries in the timings between 10 am to 8 pm. So, visit this country, which offers you an excellent combination of the old and modern. It is the ideal way to have a beautiful vacation, the memories of which will last for a time. Tel Aviv due to its rich culture will be in your hearts forever.

Bordered by coral reefs, the Whitsundays are some of the most beautiful and scenic islands in the world. Surrounded by sparkling waters, and with white sandy beaches galore, they have something to offer even the most hardened of traveller.

While there, you should sail around the seventy four islands, to get a true experience of the diversity of the area. Visit the Airlie Beach Lagoon and paddle your feet in the temperate waters, or learn to scuba dive and see some of the prettiest fish that you will ever have the chance to swim with.

While on the Whitsundays, go crocodile watching, or catch a seaplane to an unoccupied beach and picnic in private. You can also see where Baz Luhrmanns Australia’ was filmed, and spend time with likeminded people.

The Whitsundays were named by captain cook in the eighteenth century, and are the largest group of offshore islands in Australia. The majority of the islands are designated national parks, meaning that their unspoilt beauty can remain. Only eight of the islands are inhabited, and offer island resorts for accommodation when you are making your trip. There are a number of places to stay, including hotels, hostels and areas to camp. You can also indulge in an overnight sailing trip, to really capture the essence of the islands. The islands are all family friendly so you can take young children along with you, and there are plenty of activities to keep all age groups occupied.

The islands are accessible from Brisbane and Cairns, and from Brisbane takes a mere hour and thirty five minutes. If you are going to visit the islands, make sure that you have Travel Insurance, as there are a lot of outdoor activities to get involved with.

Located in the South American country of Uruguay the capital of Montevideo is home to over 1.3 million residents. With such a large population and being the largest city in Uruguay, there is much to see and do in this vibrant city.

When getting around you have the options of bus, taxi or rental cars. All options of travel are cheap and efficient. Once you reach Uruguay you will see that this is an old city, with small and charming museums, and is not overrun by tourists. Another thing you may notice is for such a big city there are only a few skyscrapers that dominate the sky line.

If you want to see where Guiseppe Garibaldi, a 19th century Italian hero hid in exile for years, then you want to check the Casa Garibaldi. The Casa Rivera is the National Historical Museum that houses furniture, paintings, documents and artifacts that tell the story of indigenous Uruguayan history all the way to their independence. This museum is actually spread out into 5 different houses, with the main being the former home of Fructuoso Rivera - the first Uruguayan president. Museo Torres Garca is another museum that has a collection of art from Torres Garca the Uruguyan painter and also contains artwork from other contemporary artists.

While in Montevideo you will see that the people have great pride in their land and history. Plaza Independencia located in the middle of the old city and is a large square lined with beautiful palm trees with a colossal statue paying homage to Jos Artigas the city’s greatest hero. Visitors are allowed to pay their respect by going to the tomb located underground. One building that would be impossible not to see is the Palacio Salvo created by Italian architect Mario Palanti. This magnificent building was once the tallest building in Montevideo. The architecture and design is a mix of neo-romanticism, gothic and classical influences - you can take free elevator ride to the top that will give you breathtaking views of the city.

For a bit of shopping, food and entertainment head over to the Mercado del Puerto. The Mercado del Puerto is like an indoor maze where you will find artists and street musicians. You can purchase books, crafts, souvenirs, clothing and other wares. If you love meat you will love the mouth-watering delicacies of Uruguayan cuisine. In this market you can gorge on steak and chicken, try spicy sausage (hngaras) or enjoy a variety of meats (parillada). With your meal have a sangria or medio y medio, a white wine mixed with sparkling wine.

Montevideo has a very pleasant year-round climate, so any month of the year that you choose to visit will be great.

Ever wanted to get away form it all and cut yourself off from the outside world, then the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, Africa is the place for you. Ngorongoro is not actually a crater but a Caldera. A Caldera is formed when a Volcano collapses in on itself and this happened here millions of years ago. This massive crater like feature is 20 kms in diameter and 600 metres deep; it is the largest, unflooded and completely preserved caldera in the world. As you peer over this vast expanse from the cliff like edges you would think it is a baron landscape with no life. However pick up a pare of binoculars and take a look around at the floor 600m below and you will see signs of life.

What you may be seeing is Cape buffalo, one of the most dangerous animals in Africa; this will then give you some indication of the scale of the caldera you see before you. The In fact Ngorongoro crater is so large that is generates its own weather system with clouds often surrounding the rim of the crater where there is densely forested areas. Sometimes these clouds are so dense that they spill into and fill up the crater. The weather here can be so strange and localised that one park of the crater could be basking in sunshine, while the other side of the crater is experiencing torrential rain.

The main attraction of the Ngorongoro Crater is the wildlife. Here the animals have a refuge and thrive. There is a surprising amount of big game here including the Black Rhino which are about 30 strong. In the dry season the Rhino are hard to spot as the sleep all day in the long grass, but during the rainy season they are out grazing and litter the crater floor. Ngorongoro is also famous for its Lion population which have been filmed extensively. However these Lions are chronically inbred but the isolation of the crater keeps new Lions and new blood lines from getting in from the Serengeti which is nearby.

The crater has a lake in the centre called Lake Magadi. This is a huge soda lake which is home for at least some of the year to hundreds and thousands of Flamingos. With the exception of the long necked Giraffe due to the steep walls, most of the common animals of Africa are found here. Many of these animals are residents of this amazing place so if you are going to travel Africa you will more than likely get to see some of the big five roaming the crater floor.

Officially the Ngorongoro Crater is open just after dawn and there is a beautiful lodge there called the Sopa Lodge. This would be a great stop on your Africa holidays and I would highly recommend it to anyone, you really have to see it to believe it.
